A Message from the Director
The Radiologic Technology program continues a tradition of excellence that began in the 1940's as a hospital based school at Charlotte Memorial Hospital and now currently a part of Carolinas College of Health Sciences. Our four full-time faculty members have many years of experience in both clinical work in major hospitals and classroom teaching. Our graduates have achieved a 100 percent pass rate on the American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) credentialing examination for 23 of the past 24 years and are typically employed in the imaging profession each year. Our commitment is to go beyond the technical education and develop a total professional by graduating caring, competent, and proficient radiographers.

Interesting Facts - Radiologic Technology:
  • 100% first-time pass rate on the American Registry
of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam
  • $40,000 per year average starting salary.

  • Program Overview
In a world of digital technology, being well prepared for a career in Radiologic technology is paramount. The mission of Carolinas College of Health Sciences is to educate future healthcare providers by integrating theoretical concepts with clinical experiences.

Radiologic technology is the science that deals with the use of x-rays for diagnostic purposes in medicine. It is the radiographer with the use of digital technology who performs the radiographic examination that creates the images needed for diagnosis. Radiologic Technologists work under the direction of radiologists or other physicians in hospitals, clinics, physician offices and specialized imaging centers.

Radiographers must maintain a high degree of accuracy in radiographic positioning and exposure technique. They must maintain knowledge about radiation protection and safety. They must remain sensitive to the physical and emotional needs of the patient through good communication, patient assessment, patient monitoring, and patient care skills. Radiographers use professional and ethical judgment and critical thinking when performing their duties.

The School of Radiologic Technology at Carolinas College of Health Sciences is accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Graduates are awarded an Associate in Applied Science degree and are eligible to take the National Registry Exam given by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists.

More than 1,350 hours of guided practice in hospital and clinical settings are included in this two-year program. Through classroom and clinical experiences, students learn to safely utilize x-rays to perform diagnostic imaging procedures using client positioning techniques and state-of-the-art equipment. Students are introduced to advanced imaging techniques such as sonography, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computerized tomography (CT) and radiation therapy.
