PHLEBOTOMY
Susan Thomasson, M.Ed, MT (ASCP) SH, LMBT
Coordinator of the Phlebotomy program
In this fast-paced 10-week program you will spend five weeks in class learning the basics of collecting blood specimens by venipuncture and by skin puncture. You will
have lectures on anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, safety and infection control and the procedures. After passing this portion of the class with a grade of
"C" or better, you will move on to five weeks of clinical rotations. At the end of the program, you will take a comprehensive examination and will be eligible to
sit for a national certifying examination.
The phlebotomist is a major player in the field of laboratory medicine. The diagnosis of a patient is dependent on the quality of blood
specimens collected by the phlebotomist.
