Director of the School of Clinical Laboratory Sciences this includes programs in Medical Technology and Phlebotomy.

A Message from the Director
Are you interested in biology or chemistry? Do you like to perform laboratory procedures and to problem solve? Are you looking for a career in health care, but are reluctant about having patient contact?

If you answered yes to any of these questions then you may be interested in a career in clinical laboratory sciences. CCHS offers a one year program for applicants who have a bachelor's of science degree. The Medical Technology Program founded in 1942 has experienced faculty members who teach the students the necessary skills and knowledge that are needed to be a successful Medical Technologist (sometimes referred to as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist). While the didactic lectures and the student laboratory training takes place at CCHS, the clinical experiences are mainly conducted in the laboratory at Carolinas Medical Center (CMC). The curriculum encompasses all areas of a clinical laboratory as well as a variety of laboratory experiences due to the large volume of testing at CMC. Join us as we take you on a tour of the laboratory and inform you of what to expect if you pursue a career in Medical Technology. You will also see what an important role that the Medical Technologists/Clinical Laboratory Scientists play in the health care community. Individual information sessions are available upon request and please review the attached brochure which has more detailed prerequisite requirements and application information.

  • Program Overview
Medical technologists, also known as clinical laboratory scientists, analyze human blood, tissues and body fluids or supervise the performance of medical laboratory tests using a wide variety of instruments, microscopes, computers, chemicals and other methods of clinical analysis. They perform laboratory tests necessary for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. There are several different areas in which a Medical Technologist can work including clinical chemistry, hematology, immunology, immunohematology (blood banking), microbiology, TB/mycology, molecular biology, urinalysis, toxicology and management. The majority of Medical Technologists work in hospital laboratories, while others are employed by private physicians, public health agencies, independent laboratories, biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies or industrial medical/research laboratories.

Carolinas College of Health Sciences Medical Technology Program is a one-year program for students who have a four-year bachelor degree preferably in a science. The program is accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences. Graduates of the Medical Technology Program are prepared to function as an entry level medical technologist/clinical laboratory scientist and are eligible to take a national certifying examination.
